Declaration of the Group of 77 plus China
in support of the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
March 26, 2015
Translated and edited by Charles McKelvey.
Editor's note: The Group of 77 plus China is a coalition within the United Nations of countries of the South. It was established in 1964 by 77 nations, and by 2013 it had 133 member nations. The group promotes the common economic interests of Third World nations, and it seeks to develop South-South cooperation.
The Group of 77 plus China expresses its rejection of the recent decision of the government of the United States of America to expand its unilateral sanctions against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela through an executive order signed by President Barack Obama on March 9, 2015, which declares “a national emergency with respect to the unusual and extraordinary threat to national security and to the foreign policy of the United States that the situation in Venezuela represents.”
At the same time, we reaffirm the declaration approved in the Summit of the Chiefs of State and of Government of the Group of 77, held in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which strongly rejected the imposition of laws and regulations of an extraterritorial character and any other form of economic and coercive measures, including economic sanctions, against countries in development.
The Group of 77 plus China deplores such measures, and it reiterates its firm support for the sovereignty, the territorial integrity and the political independence of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. In this regard, the Group of 77 plus China emphasizes the need of respect for international law … (and) … the Charter of the United Nations.
The Group of 77 plus China underscores the positive contribution of Venezuela in the strengthening of South-South cooperation, of solidarity, and of friendship among the peoples and nations, with the intention of promoting peace and development.
The Group of 77 expresses its solidarity with and support for the Venezuelan government, affected by these measures, which do not contribute in any form to the spirit of economic and political dialogue and of understanding among countries. In this sense, it urges the international community to adopt urgent and effective measures to eliminate the use of coercive economic measures against any state, and particularly against countries in development.
The Group of 77 plus China exhorts the government of the United States to reflect and to take the alternative road of dialogue with the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in conformity with the principles of respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples. Therefore, it urges the government of the United States to revoke the above mentioned executive order.
