For nearly forty years, I have been on a journey of personal encounter with the movements of the oppressed, particularly African-American and African nationalism, the Honduran popular movement, and the Cuban Revolution. The journey has included meeting persons as well as reading the writings and speeches of movement leaders and intellectuals. Through this personal experience, I have come to appreciate the wisdom of the oppressed. And I have come to believe that public discourse in the countries of the North, and particularly the United States, is in a profound sense Eurocentric, even in its progressive currents, by virtue of its insufficient encounter with the movements from below. I believe that we in the North could much improve our understanding-seeking-social-action through personal encounter with the social movements formed by the peoples of the Third World.
Although I formally retired from college teaching in 2011, I continue to be dedicated to the education of the peoples of the North, seeking to open doors to a journey of discovery in the South. As a part of this mission, I offer a general presentation on "Cuba, Latin America, and the Global Conflicts of Our Time." The lecture succinctly presents the Third World perspective on the modern world-system, including: the historical development of structures of colonial and neocolonial domination; the emergence of Third World anti-colonial and anti-neocolonial movements, of which Cuba is an important example; and the resurgence of the movements since 1995, characterized by the emergence of progressive/socialist governments in Latin America and the persistence of socialist Cuba. The presentation will consume half of the allotted time, with the second half devoted to questions, comments, and discussion.
The presentation could focus on components of the general presentation, such as: “The structures of the neocolonial world-system” or “U.S. Imperialism in Latin America.” Or a presentation could be made on other themes, including “The African-American movement in the United States,” “Anti-Imperialism in the United States in the 1960s,” or “Cross-Horizon Encounter: A method for the attainment of social scientific objectivity.”
To learn more about my background, please see the “About” page. Also please visit my blog, “The View from the South: Commentaries on world events from the Third World perspective;” or go to the reading, “The Cuban revolutionary project and its development in historical and global context.”
