Global Learning, LLC
I established Global Learning (a sole member Limited Liability Company) upon my retirement from Presbyterian College in 2011. My intention is to contribute to the education of the peoples of the North with respect to the political economy of the modern world-system.
I seek to make clear, in the first place, the historic processes of conquest, colonialism, and superexploitation that established the structural foundations of today’s neocolonial world-system, which is maintained by classic and new forms of imperialism, economic aggression, and war undertaken by the core powers. In seeking to understand the sources of today’s problems, we must grasp that the material splendor and technological advances of some nations today are more a consequence of domination than of individual effort and creativity.
In the second place, I endeavor to awaken consciousness in the North of the historic and present-day Third World revolutions and social movements, which have been developing alternative concepts, principles, strategies, and political-economic systems, seeking to construct, in theory and practice, an alternative world-system that is more just, democratic, and sustainable. Founded in the 1950s on the bases of faith, hope, and science by the newly independent nations of Asia and Africa plus China and Cuba, the Third World project has experienced renewal during the last twenty years, in response to the global turn to neoliberalism and imperialist wars. The Third World project represents the only viable option for humanity, as global elites increasingly demonstrate their moral and intellectual incapacity to constructively address the problems that humanity confronts.
The Website contains links to my twice-weekly Substack editorial column, launched on March 30, 2021, “Knowledge, ideology, and real socialism in our times.”
And the site contains titles and links to articles of mine that have been published in Counterpunch (from 2018 to 2020), Global Research (2020), Friends of Socialist China (2021), and New Cold War (2021).
The Website also contains information on my book on Cuba, which interprets the Cuban Revolution in the context of the world-system. It maintains that Cuba is an important example in a world in which prevails domination, superexploitation, aggression, and distortions of truth. The subtitle of the book, “The Light in the Darkness,” was inspired by the Cuban poet and essayist Cintio Vitier, who called the Cuban Revolution “the sun of the moral world.”
The Website includes my blog, “The View from the South: Commentaries on world events from the Third World perspective.” The blog contains 548 posts that were published from June 9, 2013 to August 18, 2019. Visit the Blog Index for an overview of the themes and categories.
In addition, the Website has a page dedicated to recommended reading, focusing on books that are central to the Third World critique of the political-economy of the world-system; and the Website contains some of my writings on Cuba, Venezuela, and the issue of race.
The section on “Voices of the Third World” contains access to the speeches and writings of historic leaders of the Third World project as well as selections of recent speeches and declarations by Latin American leaders and international organizations that are carrying forward the Third World project for a new international economic order.
